Week 6: Types of Subdivision

 by Zee on 18/10/2012
What is types of subdivisions?
  • Narrow the scope of a heading
  • Bring out specific aspects of a subject

Types of subdivisions:
(1) Topical:
Limit the concept of a heading to a specific subtopic. It could represent the actions, attributes or    aspects

Archaeology--Methodology

(2) Form:
Indicate what an item is rather than what it is about.

Technology--Bibliography--Periodicals
(for a bibliography that is issued as a periodical)

(3) Chronological:
Indicate the time period covered in the work.

Archaelogy--History--18th century

(4) Geographic
If a work discusses a topic in regard to a specific location, geographic subdivisions may be used to group together common coverage

Archaelogy--Egypt

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In LCSH, a heading may have its subdivision if being indicated as follows:
Example 1:
If the book's subject heading is about "Architect-designed jewellery" and the origins of the subject matter is in Malaysia; the cataloging should be recorded as follows:

Architect--Designed jewellery--Malaysia

Example 2:
If the book's Narrower Term (NT) is as shown in Example 2, the cataloging should be as follows:

 Architectural firms--Malaysia

Example of practical hour:

BOOK 1

How did I determine the subdivision for this book?

Step 1:
The Subject heading "Mosque" indicated with "(May Subd Geog)".
Hence, I catalogued it as Mosque--Malaysia as the content of the book discusses about mosques in Malaysia.

Step 2:
As for its BT, I chosed  Architecture, Islamic as the content of the book explains about the architectural design guideline

Step 3:
As the book also explains in general about mosque as community centres for contemporary muslims, so, I also include second Broader Term for this book : Community centers.

So, the descriptive cataloging for this book is as follows:

Mohamad Tajuddin Haji Mohamad Rasdi.
The mosque as a community development centre:
programme and architectural design guideline for
     contemporary muslim societies/Mohamad Tajuddin Haji
Mohamad Rasdi.- Skudai: Universiti Teknologi Malaysia,

Week 5: Subject Cataloging

What is Subject cataloging?
Process of determining the Subject Heading of an item that best represent the subject of the material.

Why Subject cataloging?
To provide vocabulary control: to control the terms used in a catalog, bibliography or indexes.
  • Records the hierarchical and relative concept
  • The size of the scope of the topic
  • Synonyms
  • Homonyms
How to do Subject Cataloging?
Step 1: Do the Subject Analysis first
(the content of the book, preface etc)

Step 2: Decide the keywords to represent the subject using this reference:

Library of Congress Subject Headings

Note: This reference sure is thick and being produced in volumes. Click HERE for quick tutorial on an example of how to read the reference.

Example of Practical Hour:

BOOK 1

How did I determine the subject heading for Subject Cataloging using the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH)?

Step 1
Find the keyword "System Simulation"
Step 2:
UF means "Used For": need to refer to previous heading
Step 3:
The Subject Heading for this book according to Library of Congress is "Simulation Methods"

Hence, the cataloging with Subject Heading for this book is as follows:

Banks, Jerry
Discrete-event system simulation / Jerry Banks; John
    S. Carson II.- New Jersey: Prentice-Hall International,
    c1984
         - xiv, 514 p; ill; 24 cm

             systems engineering

         1. Simulation Methods
I.Carson, John S.                  II. Title                    III. Series

BOOK 2

How did I determine the subject heading for Subject Cataloging using the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH)?
Based on its title, preface and by scanning the content of the book, it's apparent that the book is generally about "sistem kejuruteraan" and specifically about "kejuruteraan kawalan". So, this book should be catalogued under these two terms.

Acoording to LCSH, the Broader term (BT) is "System Engineering" and the Narrower term (NT) is "Automatic control"

The Subject cataloging should keep a record of its narrower term(NT) followed by its Broader Term (BT) such as follows:

Herlina Abdul Rahim.
Pengenalan sistem kejuruteraan kawalan / Herlina Abdul
Rahim; Ruzairi Abdul Rahim.- Skudai: Universiti
   Teknologi Malaysia, 2004
          - x; 128; ill;  26 cm
          - Includes bibliographies and indexes
          - ISBN 983-52-0349-0

          1. Automatic control                 2. Systems engineering
          I. Ruzairi Abdul Rahim            II. Title
