Week 3: Descriptive Cataloging

 by Zee on 27/09/2012
What is Descriptive Cataloging?

  • The part of cataloging concerned with identifying and describing an item in a bibliographic record and the selection of access points.
  • It describes physical attributes of the work. Descriptive cataloging includes title, an edition statement (if one is provided), ISBN, series, and notes that describe important features of the work, such as the presence of a bibliography or index.
Example of First level Description

1- Parallel Title
2- First statement of responsibility (the author)
3- Edition statement
4- First place of publication
5- First Publisher
6- Date of publication
7- Other physical details (1074 p: no of pages to describe thickness; map: the book comes with map illustration; 28 cm: the height of the book)

Macromedia flash 5: grafik dan animasi digital /Jamalludin, Zaidatun Tasir.- Kuala Lumpur: Venton, 2001
- vii, 363p.; pic.; 25cm
- Siri  kedua
- ISBN 9832031362

Explanation:
The description highlighted in red was said to be incorrect. Our lecturer mentioned that since this book is published in series, in which Macromedia Flash 5 is the main topic for every series, I need to add semicolon after writing down "Macromedia flash 5" to indicate "grafik and animasi digital" as the second series of this publication. The word "siri kedua" need to be added at the second level cataloging part as shown

Self Study 1

by Zee on 21/09/2012

Since I did not attend the class last week due to work commitment, I only received this task yesterday. Hopefully, I am not too late to catch up with the rest of my classmates :)

Anyway, here's the outcome of my personal visit to the PSZ:

Task: Pay a visit to FP resource centre and PSZ (UTM main library) or any other library/resource centre. Find out:

1.  How do you locate materials in the library?
Step1 : Looking for the materials that we need by refer to the searching system INFOLAN in PSZ.
Step 2 : The system will show the availability of the materials and its call number.
Step 3 : The call number will show the location of the materials in PSZ.

2.  How do you know that certain materials that you are looking for are available in the library?
The INFOLAN system in the PSZ will show the availability of the materials.

3.  What information is given about the library materials?
Title, item type, key word, subject, division, author, source, SNN, DOI, accession number, data base,Publishers, publication date.

4.  Are there any tools/schemes used for such information/ date in #2 can be generated?
We able to access the INFOLAN in PSZ through the intranet in the UTM campus.

5.  How the materials arranged on the selves?
The materials arranged on the selves according to the call number.

6.  What is/are schemes used for that such arrangement can be made?
Library of congress classification (LCC)

7.  Are there different shelves/ area for different types of materials? ( AV, Journals, Large books, special collections)
Yes, different types of materials are located at different location. For example, large book (more than 28cm will located at the separate place and give the ‘ f ’ (folio) symbol.

I also did some readings on Library Cataloging. Here is what I gathered:

What is library Catalog?
A library catalog (or library catalogue) is a register of all bibliographic items found in a library or a list of library materials in collection. Whilst cataloging is the preparation of bibliographic info for catalog records.

The purpose of cataloging the materials in library:-
  • For easy and effective retrieval
  • To let the patrons and know the type of the materials available in the library.
  •  Let library users know what is in the location and where materials located.
  • Catalog is used as an index of the book, the library able to find the materials which are meet their specification just refer to the catalog
  •  Catalog is provided the access point to the user to find the materials.
  •  A computer catalog can potentially provide the user access to any of the information contained in a cataloging record
  •  To ensure that the amount of book meet the quota of number of students. This is to ensure the library consists of collection of information or materials that are enough to cater the number of students in that school or university population. For example, 1:20 for History means that if the school has 2000 students, its library needs to have 200 units of the same book that fall under History category to ensure that every student has equal opportunity to borrow it. Any number below 200 means that the library needs to stock up its collection.
What are the three main areas in catalog record?
  • Classification - the call number
  •  Description - No. of pages (thickness), the height (in cm), publisher etc
  •  Subject - the subject of the book itself

Week 2: Information Organization & Retrieval

 by Zee on 21/09/2012

A library normally consists of a vast amount of information that needs to be organised accordingly for easy retrieval in the future.

There are 3 domains of information sources:

primary source
secondary source

tertiary source

Information source
Elaboration/example
Primary source
§         Original materials from the time period involved and have not been filtered through interpretation.
§         Examples: diary, interview, photograph, letter
Secondary source
§         Interpretations and evaluations of primary sources.
§         Not evidence, but rather commentary on and discussion of evidence.
§         Examples: Journals, Dissertation, Biographies
Tertiary source
§         a distillation and collection of primary and secondary sources.
§         Example: Encyclopedia, Fact book

Why do we need to organize these information?

For effective and easy retrieval in a short amount of time.

I couldn't agree more with this. Think about it. Without a proper and systematic way of organising a vast amount of information in a library, won't it be troublesome if we need to search a particular information manually from shelf to shelf?

And not to mention the pain in the neck for tilting your head too long. :p

Well, that's all for today.

"Get ready with Descriptive Cataloging for next week," En. Razak said.

"Baik, tuan!" hehehe

Week 1: Greeting

 by Zee on 13/09/2012
Salam to all,

My name is Norzie Khamis and I am pleased to have the opportunity to join this class this semester. This blog shall compile my reflections on what I have learnt every week.

Reflection is the new way of thinking :)

To be honest, I have a very minimum knowledge in this field as my degree background did not really expose me to directly use technology and especially dealing with managing a resource centre.  Therefore, almost everything in regards of this course is a new thing for me. I hope that this course would be an eye opener for me and of course, this blog stands as medium to share and learn together. So, I am openly welcome for any constructive comments from my readers in regards of my posts.

Nice meeting everyone. Cheers!
